My Approach

I spend a lot of time observing and getting to know participants through different entry points into drama. These can include games, drama exercises and reflections on everyday topics. From here, there are discussions and trials in creating a narrative or using a drama methodology to find a possible solution to a problem. With this outline, I add structure and aesthetic elements of drama. Participants then give their input on how the piece best represents what they want to say. We always ensure that the audience feels a connection to the story or problem so both groups can move forward together. Here are some examples of how I use this approach.

This is My Song

This community engagement project  was in partnership with with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. Designed for hospice patients and cancer survivors, participants presented their memories against songs that held special meaning for them. The project ended with a showcase for families and caregivers that brought everyone closer together. https://youtu.be/_XRWDm-hwQ8

A Set with Circles

Eleven year old students took on the role of set builders to create circular props from cardboard cartons and old bedsheets. In the process, they understood how to measure the area of a circle against the material for their props. They closed the project by creating small scenes for a kindergarten play.

Stress

A forum theatre piece for inmates about handling stressful situations with family, employers and old friends when they leave prison. In forum theatre, the audience gets to make changes to try different outcomes to a negative situation. This piece was performed and facilitated by inmates as an educational programme for their peers.
